Simluated Rush Hour
Todays posting is brought to you by the "People You Want To Punch In The Face" department!

I stayed at work until 7:30PM today (and had to be let out through security since they lock the doors at 7... except that security wasn't so I kinda had to sneak out... ; ).

When you stay at work that late, one bonus you would really expect is that you can avoid traffic. This was true when I went out onto the road I drive on for most of the way home as I saw there were only 4 cars in front of me. The problem? This road though having a speed limit of 80km/h only has one lane and doesn't allow you to pass people. Keeping this in mind, you can see the frustration of having the front car driving at 40km/h for no reason whatsoever.

They joyfully near-doubled the length of my drive home for fun!

This reminded me of the first time I ever went camping. On the way home our drive was rather interesting. The traffic would move at 80km/h... and then all of a sudden would slow down to 3km/h for about half an hour until it would speed up again to 80km/h for about 5 minutes. Then back to slow again... with a horrible repeating cycle.

My theory at the time as to why this would be happening is as follows:

Some guy who likes to annoy people for no reason drives his car as slowly as possible. This was another situation with a one-lane high speed road with no real potential for passing people. As such, traffic slows to a near halt.

What, you might ask, is the cause of the speed ups then? Well you see, that's when people get so frustrated that they start ramming the guys car from behind and he realizes he should probably speed up. Instead, he pulls over to the side of the road, lets a few people pass, and then starts his game again.

Sure... I might be crazy.... but at least I keep myself entertained. ; )

Actually this is a well known phenomenon

Traffic flow if frequently modeled as compression and depression wave.

For example, see this (http://www.h3.dion.ne.jp/~hosom1/bunko.files/393.files/39_3.htm).

Traffic can also be modelled as a... thing... of... things.

The Thing Of Things. Kris says I should make a film called that.

Um... sorry about the traffic. : )

There is also the fact that old people tend to drive in erratic patterns akin to the dance of a honey bee. That is, they shouldn't be driving at all XD

Something that is incapable of moving at speeds of more than one kilometer per hour should not be allowed to be in charge of a machine that can potentially move up to 200 kilometers per hour. 0_0

*blinks* You used kilometres instead of miles!
*blinks* I approve. : )

As much as old people should have their cars removed from them, there are also a large number of young and middle aged people who deserve the same fate.

Last night driving home from Montreal I encountered so many drivers who randomly cut you off in a lane change without even signalling, randomly breaking for no reason, and other fun behaviour.

Traffic slowed down on the highway from 120km/h to 5km/h because of an accident......... on the other side of the road! Aaargh! ; )

Fortunately me and my driving companion are not easily annoyed. We'd already lost a good 30 minutes of time when we stopped by to see my sister since she pulled the classic, "when I said north... what I meant was south..." and had laughed about it instead of being upset.

I also got to have fun driving standard for a significant period of time for the first time in my life. I'm starting to get kind of decently ok!

randomly breaking for no reason

Err... make that randomly 'braking'.

Although... it would be rather odd and mildly entertaining (in an evil sort of way) if cars did start randomly breaking while you were driving. I suspect that would reflect more poorly on the cars than the driver though.

Then again, I'm sure you could not-so-randomly break your car by smashing it into barriers and such.

Haha, yeah, I thought I'd try my hand at estimating something feasible in kilometers.

And I agree about the young and middle-aged people ><

I think my greatest traffic pet peeve is people who don't signal . . . it drives me *nuts.*
